30th June 1979

Saturday 30
Worked 10.00 - 6.30 = quite busy in the afternoon
Sam at Oulton Park

he didn't come here tonight

Phoned him at 7.00
He phoned me at 11.00 from the Gayton Hotel

Stan phoned chatted with him for 1/2 hour

Well what do you reckon to tonights knitting pattern??? It takes a 'real' man to wear a canary yellow pullover hee hee

As you may have read (or may not have read, suppose it depends on how avid a 70s fan you are??) Annie & I went on a ghost hunt on Friday. We didn't see anything but I certainly felt the changes in temperature in the different rooms. However, we were oblivious to this flurry of activity around us ..... make of it what you will .......eeeeeek lol ;-)

These pictures are courtesy of Salford City Council Forum page

These are a few of my photos ... there are some orbs or was that just the flash ;-)

OMG what is that????........... phew it is only DP messing about as per usual!!

29th June 1979

Friday 29
College at 9.30
Got my report = very average (mmmm! don't seem to have kept that one??)
Walked round town
Came home for dinner

Sam phoned

Phoned him at 7.30 to tell him I was going to Fi's and not the Brick 'do'
he didn't ring back!

As you know I have had Annie Mouse staying this weekend. We have ghost hunted, shopped, drank Pimms and today we went to Southport where we both spent our teen years.
It absolutely poured down en route. But the sun shone whilst we were there.

Ah! The Gallary Grill. It was the place to hang out for hours with one cup of coffee or hot chocolate. If you couldn't get a window seat it was a disaster... nowadays my teen and her mates use Starbucks for the same experience

This is 'The 'Brick'

where the sign says 'Baron's bar' this is where we would hang out

The Art Centre had the best bar back in the 70s/80s.... didn't get a chance today to go in there

The Shell Shop where 'J' and I spent hours in our teens...... mmmm spent hours in their today too... then it was all shells and you would go up the iron staircase to the shop. The new owner is a book addict so mostly books but when we were there today he did sell a coral for £90.
The conversation was priceless.
Buyer 'if she doesn't like it she can give it away'
Owner 'if you break it en route she will still have two lovely pieces'
There was a lot more convo but it was too surreal for words!

The oldest Eubank cleaner I have seen!!
.
Then onto Wayfarers Arcade. As a teen this was where you would be followed by store detectives or shop assistants as it is soooo posh ... teens were not tolerated!

a statue of Red Rum ... 3 times winner of the Grand National

& on the way home we stopped to look at the sea. It was so clear you could see Blackpool across the sea. The reflections were very clear but the photos do not pick it up quite so well

28thJune 1979

Thursday 28
Got up at 9.00
Worked 11.00 - 6.30 = horrible it rained until 3.00pm
Sam phoned at 8.15 & 11.30
Had a long, difficult talk with him
Him twisting my words about

i.e. about the supposed Brick 'do' tomorrow

Well the ghost hunt was .... well ... what can I say?? Different!
I didn't see any ghosts but I could definitely feel the differences in temperatures and 'moods' as we strolled around the place.
I had my tarot cards read... as eve
r with these things it was all positive.... 'you work hard', 'you have a 'devil' who is trying to stop you achieving', 'you will succeed and reap the financial rewards' etc etc
I will post some photos when I
have downloaded them.

Annie & I shopped 'til we dropped this afternoon (it was supposed to be a quick couple of hours .. but I know what Annie is like).
I decided we would go shopping on the train so we did
not buy too much... i.e. only buy what we can carry ... alas this didn't work out so well. We were staggering when we got home under the weight of the bargains we found. (Peacocks had a massive 70% off sale and we went to the QVC outlet shop!!)

One of my favourite places we shop at is a hospice charit
y shop. There is a lovely old guy who works there and he charges you next to nothing for the amount you buy... I spent £10 but what he charged me was £4.(I got way more than £10.00 worth of stuff)

I bought a stack of patterns, for which I was charged £2.00!! They are sewing and knitting patterns going back to the 50s maybe 60s but
definitely the 70s and 80s.
We have had such a laugh about them tonight .. how the models looked! ... you didn't have to be a 'looker' to model knitwear I can tell you!!
I just felt that they have to be saved as a record of our fashion tastes & trends which otherwise would be lost (I told the old guy this but he couldn't quite get with it... )

here is a sample of one .... Waterloo ~ Abba maybe the cause of this one??

But enough of the frivolity of shopping ....Olga is still missing. The Posse are heading South and making progress. But I have had to call out this boudalicious gal ....

Some call her Boudica, others Boudicca, I call her Boobicca. But what ever her name is ....she is one awesome gal who will take no prisoners (are you listening DP?) and find our poor last in England boudalicious friend

27th June 1979

Wednesday 27
Wages =£10.00
Worked 11.00 - 6.30 = quite busy
Fi came round and stayed the night
Letter off Sam
He phoned at 9.45am
I phoned him at 10.15pm
Love him

Well it is Friday .... thank goodness.
I have been studying all day and my brain is about to explode.
Annie Mouse is staying for the weekend so I may not be around much until Sunday.
She has told me she is bringing some of her Cliff memorabilia with her.... a kind of 'show and tell'.
Bless... she will be trying to show me and I will be telling her to stop ...pleeeease nooooo lol

We have a few things planned, most certainly a fund raising ghost hunt thing tonight at an 800 year old mansion. Apparently it is 'very spiritually active'.... OMG how scary is this going to be!!

Annie has a fear of dressed up people and she was concerned that there may be some there. I have put her mind at rest I told her that the only ones dressed up will be the ghosts in their natural costumes of the time, so she should be ok hee hee

Elvis Ghost Riders in the Sky 1970

Travares - Ghost of Love 1978

Monster Mash 1973

oooo I am scaring myself now eeeeek!!

You may see Annie & I on web cam ..... that is more scary

25th & 27th June 1979

Monday 25
Went to college at 10.00
Got 40% for Cookery
& 31.5% for Business Studies
Got to do it again on 5th Sept. (I sooo hated Business Studies .... well it was the lecturer I disliked really. He had horrid crooked teeth, a bad mop of greasy hair and spat when he spoke ... eeeew)
Bought a bikini for £5.99
Suitcase for £10.50

Sunglasses £2.45

Sam rang at 11.00 ish

He said he was tired (awww!!!)

Tuesday 26
Got up at 9.45
They didn't need me in work but it was very sunny
Sunbathed all morning
Went to Fi's
Sunbathed there in the afternoon
= I am quite reddy brown
Went to Fi's to discuss the holiday (to La Rochelle in August)
Sam phoned
He'd been playing 5 - a - side footy.

I nipped up town at lunch time, dodging the rain showers. On an impulse, tempted by the 'golden arches' (plus I was starving) I decided to pop in and get a McDonalds Happy Meal for my dinner (cheese burger, fries and strawberry milk shake... bang goes the diet but yummy after a week of rabbit food!)
Anyway happy was the last thing you could use to describe the counter staff... words like 'brusk', 'incoherent','couldn't be bothered' were more appropriate.

It reminded me of a training video by McDonalds C1970s, that I was sent ages ago.
The guys today were certainly like the 'before' examples...... perhaps I should send it to McDonalds for them to use in training their staff today ... it has more 'cheese' than they put on their burgers but at least they could be 'happy & gay'.

Check out how many times the young lad says 'courtesy' although to me it sounds like 'curtsy'.

Wouldn't it be funny if every time you went into McDonalds the staff curtsied before they took your order lol .

23rd & 24th June 1979

Saturday 23
Worked 10.00 - 6.15 = wet (I am now back in the Outdoor cafe... it was a wonder we didn't close up as it was wet)
Phoned him at 12.30

He didn't get in until 4.30 am this morning (no wonder he didn't ring the night before!)
Rang him at 7.45

Went babysitting at 8.00 pm

He rang
me at midnight but I wasn't back from babysitting (bet Mum was pleased ... not!)
Phoned him when I got home but the phone was engaged

Sunday 24th
Supposed to work but was rained off (I guess they made no money yesterday) Stayed in all day
Made a pencil skirt out of the same material as Sam's jacket (so easy to make. 70s top tip never try climbing onto a bus with one on)
Sam phoned

He went to Donnington Park to Formula one
racing this afternoon
Phoned Fi at 10.00 she had just got in.

Well Wimbledon fortnight has started and yes it is raining... well it is up North.

I was lucky enough to go to the event in 1977. I hav
e posted about it on here when I did a whistle stop tour of 1977 from memory and my scrapbook as I couldn't find my diary of then... but I have found it now

23rd June 1977
Wimbledon Trip

Saw Chris Evert
Fiback (Wojtek Fibak)
Motram (Buster Mottram) Rameries (Raul Ramirez)
12 hours on a coach (see back pages of diary)
(this is crossed through and marked CENSORED!!!)
We spent 12 hours on the coach
It was very boring on the way there

On the way back SP came to sit next to me on the
coach
We talked for a couple of hours & then he started to get randy (OMG!!)
He tried to get his hand up my skirt
I managed to fight him off (good girl)

Bev & Jane got DS's trousers off (OMG!!)

It's funny I don't fancy SP but I feel strangely attracted to him (OMG all those hormones!!)

Both Bev & Jane fancy DS (there will be tears I can just tell)

Anyway moving swiftly on lol

I took this photo
& bought this brochure

In 1979 the brochure looked pretty boring

Björn Borg won the mens singles beating Roscoe Tanner 6-7(4), 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4
& Martina Navrátilová won the ladies singles beating Chris Evert 6-4, 6-4 (gosh that was over quickly!!)

Interlude ~ Fanzine Frenzy VII

Welcome to Fanzine Frenzy VII
(or 7 for those who don't 'do' Roman numerals)-
again a month has passed since the last 'exciting' publication!

In May I reported my findings following my extensive research of the 'Papersurfer' family tree.
I know it took a while for the phenomenon that is DP, to take in all the inconclusive conclusive evidence (he is a bit s-l-o-w. But that is to be expected of a pea brain at his age!)

As Fanzine Ed I genuinely feel that it is my duty to give you, DP's most deranged adoring mad loyal fans as much exciting insights into his life that I can make up find hard facts about.

Earlier this month DP published on his own blog, his CV dating back into the dim and distant past. What a scoop for a Fanzine Ed!!! So much to work on.

'1953 –1959 Attended a quite well known public [US private ] prep school.'

I managed to get this photo from the school's yearbook 1956, it was a bit musty and dog-eared when it arrived but I think you will agree dear readers it is.......... ?? Yes I too am lost for words!! (gosh he but doesn't he bear a striking resemblance to some one???)

So when DP started prep school in 1953, Britain was on the tale end of food rationing following WW2 and Queen Elizabeth II was crowned Queen of England (oh and my Mum & Dad got married that year too)

By the time he left in 1959 these guys had just made their last film
This epic was released which swiped up all the awards that year
and other films included 39 Steps; Pillow Talk; North by Northwest; Sleeping Beauty (Disney); Some Like it Hot and Room at the Top.
I wonder if this film had any influence on profession DP hooked up to later??

'1959 – 1967 Attended a public [US private] school you’ve never heard of, having won a scholarship.'
'1967 – 1971 Drunk student at Art College.'

I can find no information about his teen school years... all the school would say was that there was an unfortunate accident involving bunsen burners and DP... & that the school was raised to the ground at this time. The school had no proof it was actually him that was directly involved!! mmm?? This picture taken in later life may hold a clue??

& the Art College simply said 'No Comment!'

However, this was the 'swinging 60s' and London was the hip place to be and be seen in.
I had few leads already but with a couple of carefully placed classified ads in Exchange & Mart, I received some class photos of DP 'being seen' out and about in the 60s.

With Catherine Deneuve (before she got the restraining order)
Isn't that Barbara Streisand??

His first taste of being surrounded by goddess's .. it earned him catch phrase 'I likey!'... but 'crikey' I think he has a touch of wind though ... he is dancing like Cliff Richard!

During this time (and in the nick of time) he met the lovely TG and he never looked back (great job TG using the 'shin kick control technique'!)

'1971 – 1972 Drunk student at post graduate teaching course. 1972 – 1973 Drunk lecturer at the University of London. 1973 – 1975 Drunk archivist at the Royal Academy.'

Thank goodness I live up Norff.... or he could have ended up teaching me! Wow dear readers could you imagine that????

But during this time he did manage (somehow) to developed his art though a haze... some have called this his 'Liquidity Period'

All true artists, whether they know it or not, create from a place of no-mind, from inner stillness.... but this was not the case with DP!
::: Eckhart Tolle
I've never believed in God, but I believe in DP
::: Diego Rivera
The holy grail is to spend less time making the picture than it tak es people to look at it.... & DP mastered this
::: Banksy
Painting is so poetic, while sculpture is more logical and scientific and makes you worry about gravity..... and the price of lead off the church roof which was DPs source
::: Damien Hirst

Some even chose to paint the ma
n himself!

'1975 – 1977 Sober while driving a drunk builder around SE London.'

During this time whilst his employer was, shall we say 'the worst for wear!' DP managed to renovated his Oast House, bought a yacht and sailed into various sunsets....our DP was never one to miss an opportunity, he even brought in child labour to help achieve his goals!
(Fanzine Ed note: Tsk DP!)

'1977 – 2008 Sabbatical.'

Ah the 'Sabbatical' as he may call it. Is 30 years called a sabbatical??
You may think he was being idle sitting staring out to sea or

meditating whilst contemplating his navel (Sylvie... yes I know whilst wearing sandals too, thankfully no socks though!!)

But you know readers he has actually tried his hand at many things. Maybe they weren't always permanent employ... some seasonal, others less seasonal.
I posted an ad on the safety net to find out more........

'Information urgently required!
Have you ever employed this man?
The p
eriod I am interested in is between 1977 to date.
He goes by the name of Daddy Papersurfer.
He is incredibly grumpy at times and does tend to dribble.
Has a passion for llamas and loves children but could not eat a whole one. Please e mail 70steen (at) gmail (dot)com

Your replies will be dealt with in the strictest confidence

Kind regards

70steen'

Well the reponse was under overwhelming!

Brighton District Council.... Dear 70steen, we employed DP during the summer season 1979. When I say 'summer season' it was in fact for only two days. There were many complaints from parents that their children were scared of (or was that scarred from) the new clown we had hired, due to the spray he exhumed whilst talking to the little ones... oh and that 'tsking' noise he made was a worry and I am afraid we had to let him go. I do hope he went on to find gainful employment as he did make a great cup of tea. Hope this helps?'

'London City Council - DP came to us with good references so we employed him as a Yeomon of the Guard. He seemed an amiable chap but we did however, notice that after a couple of days the ravens were disappearing from the Tower of London. As you may know, that if the ravens leave the tower, the tower and the monarchy will crumble. I don't think he was an anarchist but for England's security we had to let him go. You will be relieved to know the ravens soon returned unlike his security pass... if you are in contact with him could you please ask him to return it'

Now this one came with NO script... just on an e mail which I was about to delete as spam... sender was 'I have 2 feet, where is my other flip flop?'

I will leave it to you dear readers what occupation this may have been??

There are many more in my mail box but I think I may save them for future Fanzines.

Currently DP is hosting Olga the Travelling Bra. I am pleased to say that she arrived 'down Souff' safely and is to enjoy a 'sabbatical' of her own with the phenomenon that is DP

My main concern for her is that DP has recently become Boob (no must be Bob) Bob (no that ain't right it is Boob the Builder I am sure it is?) Boob the Builder.
I do hope he doesn't have her doing labouring for him (remember he once employed child labour so what chance does a bra have???
