31st March 1979
Grand National = Rubstic 1st (from where I was born and brought up the Grand National is a big occasion everything stops to watch the race. There was and is a need to put the 'housewife's' bet on ... the pathetic 25p each way on a horse that 'sounds a nice name', 'oooo the jockey has a nice shirt' ... never ever anything about form ! God forbid that may influence our decision. From being a small child I have had money on the National. Next weekend is the National I will have my pin out to pick the winner, or maybe looking for something significant in the name and the jockeys colours!!)
Work 11 - 5 £4.40 wages

Me & Fi went baby sitting til 2 am= shattered
Got £2.00 and bickies

30th March 1979
Letter off Sam
He phoned at lunchtime
Fi went to her grand dads funeral in Cleveleys
My brother gave me £5.00 (wow all I can think of is that I used to charge him for doing his ironing and hemming up his trousers and this was he owed me, as it is highly unlikely he would have just given me money. Brothers just don't do that kind of thing!)
Did a bit of homework
Phoned Sam
Love him
On the front it says 'colour pin-ups' so I thought I would share the bevy of beauties they published. If you click on their pictures it will take you to a piece of their music from the 70s.

I must say I have really enjoyed surfing for the sounds on this one :-)

'Well have you? Do boys stop and stare when you bombshell by and generally stampede to get to you under the mistletoe? If not, why not? Perhaps you are the original ice-maiden, all snowed up inside, freezing them out and leaving a trail of broken hearts behind you? To find out exactly what kind of appeal YOU have, answer our fun quiz and we will show you how with it (or without it) you are.'

26th March 1979

Monday 26
College at 9.00
Hardly done any work
Me & Fi had our photos taken at Wooolies
Watched Kenny Everett & Fawlty Towers
Phoned Sam
I love him
Washed my hair
I have mentioned before on here Fawlty Towers. What a brilliant comedy in true barking mad English style. The barking mad English humour can be found with Kenny Everett. You either loved him or hated him. For me he made me laugh. I my teen years featured Kenny on the TV. He was born just up the road from me in Liverpool and unfortunately he died from an Aids related illness aged 50 in 1995.
Not a particularly funny Kenny but a great live performance of Rod in the 70s
Truly barking after fabulous Bowie
Kenny as Cupid Stunt
Oh just thought I would mention. I received a plain brown envelope through the post today. Not that surprising as I have bought a few bits off an auction site recently. But this one wasn't from an auction site.........
It contained a present and a cryptic message to the effect 'saw these and thought .. 70s'
I'll give you 3 guesses who sent it and who was the partner in crime?

25th March 1979
Mother's Day
Got up at 11.20
Gave Mum her pressy and card
Walked around Ainsdale
Stayed in all afternoon
Fi rang
Sam left as usual at 7.30
Won't see him until 6/3/79
He phoned from Lime Street

'If you want to be a pear then eat a pear! If you want to be a lemon then eat a lemon. So in other words if you want to be fruity then eat fruit! Sounds fun and would be fun if this was the case but unfortunately when they say you are what you eat they don't mean it literally. (70sEd - obviously an article targeted at the less than intelligent reader!!) It's more a case of eating plenty of fruit for soft unblemished skin,; dairy products for healthy bones and lots of meat for large tantalising muscles.'
'Perhaps it's just as well we don't turn into our favourite foods because you imagine a Les Gray buttie turning up at a concert with the rest of Mud?' (70s Ed - I think this guy was taking drugs when he wrote this)
'Les adores butties (70s Ed - yep it is buttie up here too, along with sarnie or aka a sandwich) be they filled with mangos, 'nanas or Smarties'
'Mr Barry Blue admits he thoroughly enjoys cooking his own meals and experimenting with assorted foods. " I am no Cordon Bleu chef or anything like that" he laughs "I just get loads of things together mix them up, cook them and hope for the best. My favourite dish is Egg Cocotte which is eggs, beans, chips and mushrooms all beaten to a pulp (70s Ed _ not according to Delia it isn't). Then I sprinkle this over with flour, bung it in the oven and leave to cook. I must confess that when it comes out it looks vile (70s Ed - you don't say!) but it tastes delicious. I don't think there is anything sissy in a man cooking his own food!" (70s Ed - just admit it Barry YOU CAN'T COOK)
'Donny Osmond (70s Ed - swoon) is a patriotic food lover at heart. His favourite snack in between his main course meals is a large scrumptious American hamburger - our Wimpy's are like peanuts in comparison (70s Ed - if that were true he would be humongous in size... who wrote this rubbish?? lol) "Unfortunately curry and the foods I like most are always the fattening kind" laughs Gary "I'm always watching my figure anyway as I put on weight so easily - I only have to look at a doughnut and I'll gain a spare midriff!"

70s Ed -I wonder if he has just spotted a doughnut??

Had a big row cos I said I wanted treating like a girl not one of the boys.
Then everything got twisted around (oops trouble at mill hey!!)
From the 'Popswop Annual 1975' I found this article

Rob Davies (Mud)

'Lovely Rob Davies bought his first home back in 1974. It is a house on a new estate near Mitcham, Surrey. Fellow colleague, Ray Stiles was so full of envy that he too decided to buy a house on the same estate. Rob describing his house to us.
"It's nothing very big, but it's modern and I like it. I paid £12,500 for it, not in cash, I had to take out a mortgage" (70s Ed ~ What pop stars had mortgages??). "The outside wall as are white, and there is a garage and a garden. Inside there's a bathroom, sitting room, dining room come lounge, kitchen, two bedrooms and another room which I have turned into my yoga/music room" "It's a great little place and I has carpets fitted throughout, I've furnished it with modern furniture some in the habitat style" (70s Ed ~ I suppose a property like this in that area would now be about £250 - £300K?)
Les Gray (lead singer of Mud)

' Les chose to buy a flat because he didn't want all the bother of tending to the garden (70s Ed~ well that is hardly a rock 'n' roll life pruning your bushes!!). He paid a similar price for his flat that Rob paid for his house. For his money Les got: a bathroom, two bedrooms, kitchen, living room and dining room. Having seen the marvelous carpet laid in Rob's house, Les went out and bought the same carpet for his living room. He was also taken by the chair's displayed in Rob's home so, once again he rushed out and bought the exact chair's, in the same colour, as Rob's. After seeing what Les had done, Rob made sure that Les didn't enter his house until his flat had been completely furnished and decorated'
Alvin Stardust

'One could never really say he has been homeless. For there was a time when he owned two homes in the area of Liverpool. But because of working pressures he was forced to buy a home on the outskirts of London, because he wasn't finding enough time to spend with his wife and two children.
Alvin found a beautiful little place in Stanmore, Middlesex and it certainly must have mad a large hole in his pocket - the house being bought for a princely sum of £50,000. A house that cost so much you would expect it to have a golden loo! And we weren't too far out because Alvin said

Well I have finished work for the Easter break (yip ... bloody.. yippeee!!) Easter in 1979 fell 13th April (Good Friday), 16th April (Easter Monday) This year Easter is unusually early (something about new moons et al and not again in my life time! That is the gist of it!) and has thrown up such confusion with schools breaking up. My teen is off for the long weekend then back in until the 4th April then off for 2 weeks!!!! I am grateful for the early break as I need it plus I have some time off with Teen in a few weeks too!!

The other weekend when Annie Mouse stayed we danced, drank, laughed but above all we shopped. Hey that is what fellow 70steens do!!
I featured on here that we took a trip down memory lane and posted about the Double Deckers (a big favourite of ours) amongst others, following her visit.
I was big into ponys and horse riding as an early teen/pre teen but had to give it up as the lessons were cripplingly expense for mum (I do remember having a huge tantrum as maybe younger than a teen, where I was told I couldn't have a horse & could not get my head around why I couldn't keep one in the shed and garden!!)
So I had to be content in watching programmes about them.
That brings me to another favourite that Annie pointed out was 'Follyfoot Farm' (she made reference of it in my comments box). Even now 30 odd years later I can still sing along... yes OK out of tune but when did that ever stop me lol!!
I had such a huge crush on Steve Hodge ~ Steve
The girl fancied Steve but it never quite happened.... this next clip has a write up 'Steve & Dora never quite made it'
Bearing in mind I have no speakers just now .. it is a big trust on featuring this You Tube clip!!!!!

Interlude ... Fanzine Frenzy III
The phenomenon that is DP's Fan Club is still taking the world by storm. Who knows were this will all end...........
DP has been so under whelmed by this fame and non fortune, his little lie downs are becoming a bit more frequent. It is rumoured around Bloggywood, however, that it has more to do with winning a competition on FMB and the post malt celebrations. Of course this information has not been corroborated yet.
Something that has been corroborated is the brilliant news that he has employed the skills of a top, high flying secretary. Famous in her native Canada for her no nonsense approach, someone who is never afraid to take on a cause even if it does create a Fracas. I think you will all agree, dear readers, that she is the best gal for the job. She is sure to keep DP in check and keep his socks and sandals firmly on the ground...... fame can have a terrible effect on those not used to it or who are of a delicate disposition.
After the last Fanzine some of his avid fan club members offered their services too.
(A full list of his followers can be found here)
Sugar Queen offered to keep his blood sugar up with her amazing cake/ sweet making skills. yum! Dang there goes my diet!B4by
& Olga!
Well Olga the brave bra that she is, has offered cups of support should he win the Presidential election and has high hopes to become his intern!! (best of luck Olga)Well volunteered everyone, I hope you know that the salary is rubbish (well non existent but his lovely secretary is on the case). Currently he is offering flip flops but I do fear you may be made to wear socks with them!!! So if any one else sees a role for themselves ... shout up!
I know you are dying to know just what DP has been up to over the last couple of weeks?
I was tipped off that he had been working hard and hanging out with the 'beautiful people'. He was seen recently at the Oscar ceremony and 70s managed to bag some exclusive snaps of him. (At least he managed to ditch the blue T-shirt for the occasion!)

No! would you believe it readers DPs fan club badge is being worn with pride by the top celebs. It is this years must have accessory.
Uma has gone a step further and had her 'people' make it into a handbag for those special occasions on the Red Carpet.

This image was faxed through to my desk earlier
I have no idea why he is wearing a Santa outfit.... again any ideas??? Has 70s missed something???
I will end Fanzine III with a fan letter (as I did the last Fanzine).
This letter certainly tugged at my heart strings.
Dearest DaddyP
Oh I am missing you so much. I can't wait until you return home to the UK.
I see that you have been enjoying yourself, without a care in the world. Do you think of me often or even at all?? I miss the way you used to stroke me and snuggle up close. It's ok I got used to the smell eventually in fact I miss it like crazy now. I have lost weight in your absence, as I am pining for you. I miss gazing into your eyes (once I get past your eyebrows) and when you talk to me, having to wipe the slobber off my face. It is all these little things that make our relationship so unique & so special. Please hurray home and I promise I won't cause anymore fuss in the 'gated community' I will do everything you tell me to do.... promise :-).
Just in case you have forgotten what I look like (oh please don't let that be so) I have enclosed a photograph of me. I am wearing my new tassles and I have been practicing twissing them both at the same time in different directions. I nearly took someones eye out the other day but I think I have got the hang of it now.
Slobbery kisses awaiting your return
your faithful fan

From circa mid 70s in the 'girls book of the 1970s'

'My brand new silver paper boiler suit. It's really the nicest thing I have ever bought. My friends all think I look like an astronaut in it, but it doesn't put me off wearing it!' (70s Ed I bet you looked a complete wassock and your mates just laughed their socks off.... did they call the Fashion Police??'
Jeanette, London SE18
'I've seen in a catalogue a three piece rust coloured suit. Consisting of trousers, jacket and a waistcoat. I don't have the money but I'm hoping my mum will lend me the money so that I can buy it ' (70s Ed ... MUM! don't do it!!)
Sharon, Montrose, Scotland
'I like the peasanty look and my favourite outfit is fairly unusual. I wear a fantastic black apron with tiny pink roses on it, (which my mother used to wear for working in the kitchen) , with a black peasant blouse and near ankle length skirt, a blanket shawl and lovely flat tan crepe soled shoes. Not many people dress like this where I live, so they think I am absolutely mad' (70s Ed... now I am all for being yourself but really ... did you think you looked cool??)

Rosemary, Essex
'A very flimsy looking party dress which I made from enormous patterned, square sarves. I bought the scarves from a jumble sale for just 40p. I think it is much nicer than anything in the shops and it is original too!' (70s Ed... an original Essex girl, I wonder if she wore white stilettos too?)

Christine, Kew, Surrey
'It's a flimsy Victorian camisole night- dress with pin tucks and lace on the front. It is much to pretty to just wear in bed, so I embroidered it and now makes a pretty shift dress. ' (70s Ed ... wtg Chris!!)

Sociology lecturer was away today
Came home at 1/2 11
Sam phoned for 22p worth
Fi phoned
Met her at 1.20 and went trampolining
Phoned Sam but he was out at Stoke v Orient match.
He phoned back later
Love this article. Again it is 'no pressure' (much) on a teen girl. It is titled ~
'Well are you? He'll know by the way you are dressed - so check up with some of your favourite people and see what they like their girls to wear!'
Donny (swoon) says ~ 'I guess I'm just a romantic at heart. I like to see girls in large print dresses with narrow waists and full flared skirts. Makes me feel romantic just thinking about it!'
Bryan (swoon) says ~ ' I like to see a girl with a sense of good taste and style, dressed in well-cut, fashionable clothes. It's especially good when a girl can adapt high fashion to suit herself. My favourite is a long, black, slinky dress worn with thin, high heels... I really dislike great ugly platforms'

David (swoon) says ~ ' I like girls to look lady like and I think if she is quietly and tastefully dressed she looks really attractive. Elegant shoes and a handbag look great with a 30s style dress. I hate big wedgy shoes, As for materials my favourites are crepe and beautiful old prints'
mmmm I am afraid Donny as much as I love you you would never catch me in a frock like that..... so my future lies with either Bryan or David. I know I can ditch the platforms lol

Home at 3.30
Fi rang I rang her back
Sam phoned = alright not grumpy
I feel very, very tired
In the 70s we couldn't quite decide what length our skirts should be.... from mini to maxi. This article is about Midis. I found that length such a horrid one to wear so didn't follow that trend.
Quite frankly their choice of shoes is shocking so I have included what 70s would advise.... you know how much 70s loves her shoes .... as do the other 'shoe junkies' Fracas, Sylvie, B4by and Nurse Myra

Angel shoes appeal to me a lot more

This one I fully agree with

And finally if your legs are perfect

Why would you truss them up like this or wear a longer skirt?
Lets face it if you had legs like this who would be looking at your footwear!

This weekend 70steen had a fellow 70steen staying. Quite weird as we were at the same school but only hooked up as mates about 6 years ago.
Occasionally this other 70steen comments on 70steen as Anonymous, she is not a blogger but I like to think of her as a 70s researcher (or aka 'a mind of information').
I have my diaries and she has a phenomenal memory.
We spent some time this weekend chatting about what we both remembered as we were growing up. I tell you she had me saying 'OMG~ yes I had forgotten about that' on more than one occasion.
Friday night was a hoot, in fact the whole weekend was, as we drank too much wine and I attempted to write down what Annie Mouse reminded me of, for additions to 70sland (there a few things I can't even read & I wrote them!)
One of my favourite T.V. programmes of the 70s was the Here Come the Double Deckers. It ran over 17 episodes and was bunch of kids hanging out in London double decker bus, sorting out problems, having competitions, adventures but most of they were all having fun together. It was an eclectic mix of intelligence, colour, nationality & weight.
There was Doughnut, Scooper, Springer, Brains, Tiger, Sticks and Billie.
Two of the characters went on to better and brighter things
Peter Firth (Scooper) went on to appear in Equus, Hunt for Red October, Tess, Letter to Brezhnev, Pearl Harbor and the popular BBC series Spooks.
Brinsley Forde (Springer) Appeared in 'Please Sir' and Diamonds are Forever' notibly he was the was a founder of the band Azwad
Yes we were doing the dance... blame the wine !!

There is an interesting article in the Jackie magazine I have come across. I know Nurse Myra over at Gimcrack has done a lot of research into this area with some real success...... The article is called FACE FACTS
The article states that every feature on your face gives away something about your personality. So time to learn something about your friends and yourself !! (70s Ed it is a load of old tosh but I thought the little illustrations were quite cool)
EyesLarge eyes :- a dreamer or idealist
Narrowness:- a perceptive, practical character
Close together:- self centred or introspective (70s Ed my mum always told me 'never trust a man with eyes close together lol)
Expressive:- an emotional character
Eyes that flicker about continually (70s Ed worrying!):- a light weight personality, possibly full of good ideas but no staying power
Eyebrows
(is she smoking??)Thick brows:- strong personality
Marked curve in the centre:- willfulness and determination to have their own way
Wispy and wide apart:- a child-like trust in others
Lips
Full & wide:- sensual

Narrow:- firm character and not much influenced by emotions
The width indicated generosity
A narrow, pursed mouth with small round lips indicates primness and narrowness of outlook.
The gap between lip and nose:- small and deeply indented shows a quick reaction to emotional situations. A long or smooth area show calmness and forethought.
Nose

Small neat bones are feminine attributes, broad large bones are masculine ones.
Therefore, a large nose in a girl shows a god measure of the 'masculine' virtues of practical commonsense, determination and firmness of character - a dominant personality.
A small nose in a man, on the other hand, shows the 'feminine' virtues of creativity, delicacy and tact - a persuasive personality
The bridge of the nose indicates arrogance & pride - the smaller the bump, the more easy going the personality
Forehead (shape not size)

Narrow:- main influence on the character is emotion rather than intellect
High:- intelligent & deep though not necessarily decisive thought
Marked bumps:- egotist
Easily crumples into deep creases:- fluid, changeable personality
Tint lines that show early above each eyebrow:- wit
Chin (shape rather than amount)

Firm, small and well shaped:- determination and logic
Large, loose that melts into the jaw:- decisiveness and self-indulgence
Small round indentation:- charm
Deep straight cleft:- forceful personality
Small downward curving line just under lower lip:- ruthless streak
Indicate the balance between the intellect and the emotion
The nearer the eyes they are the more store is set by ideas
Small flat ears:- aggressive personality
Large ears:- calm but confident person
Fleshy lobes:- sensuality
If different characteristics are shown in the various features, this indicates a many-sided personality (70s Ed - you don't say?)
I got fed up of typing .....

6th March 1979
Boring day at college
Came home at 3.30
Had a bath
Tried to do a Sociology essay but didn't have the right books (oh that old chestnut!!)
Sam phoned at 11.00
In one of my teen albums I came across this article which is a great reminder of the time .... it is called 'Saturday Night at the Movies'
Have you noticed how many disaster flims are around lately - 'The Poseidon Adventure' started it a couple of years ago with the riveting spectacle of an ocean liner swept upside down by a gigantic wave. Everyone was on the edge of there seats as the handful of survivors fought their way through fire and water to the top of the boat, (70s Ed .. technically it was the bottom of the boat as it was upside down!) where they were rescued by a timely helicopter!
(70s Ed who can forget dear Shelley Winters plunging in to the water, swimming like fury and holding her breath for hours)
Since then we have had 'The Towering Inferno'. In which an enormous skyscraper catches fire and Steve McQueen, Paul Newman and Fred Astaire struggle to survive (70s Ed Fred was also in The Poseidon Adventure wasn't he??)
Followed by 'Airport 75' in which, you all remember, a plane plunges through the cockpit of a Jumbo Jet killing the pilot (70s Ed ... really who'd have thought that!!!) and leaving only the stewardess and Charlton Heston to bring the Jumbo down (70s Ed no problem for Charlton as he parted the Red Sea but this film could explain why I don't do the 'silverbird' as Charlton is not guaranteed to be on every flight!)
Not forgetting 'Earthquake' where we were transported to San Francisco and yes. an earthquake was recreated so realistically that the sheer force and volume actually had cinema foundations trembling! Why you may ask in these days when the n ews is full of death and destruction (70s Ed no change then 30 years on!!) do people want to go and see more death and destruction? We don't know (70s what do you mean 'you don't know' I thought 70s teen mags had the answer to everything?) but it is interesting to note that disaster films were in fashion before the Great Depression of the Thirties. And of course, going back a bit, death defying spectacles were very popular just before the fall of the Roman Empire!
(70s Ed imagine reading this as a fraught teenager... what is this saying .... yes a disaster is about to happen, how reassuring. I guess, however, it would take your mind of that spot you had just found on your chin!)
Talking about films, after an absolute dearth of pop films for years, we've suddenly had a rush of them.
There's been Slade's 'Flame', David Essex in 'Stardust', (70s Ed great film with Keith Moon and Adam faith too but a reminder what fame and fortune could bring you) Roger Daltery in the Who's Rock Opera 'Tommy'.
And now we are looking forward to (70s Ed are we??) 'Never too Young to Rock' (Mud, Rubettes, Glitterband) to be released in June. Also making a film in June are Ron and Russell Mael, with distinguished French film director Jacques Tati.
Sadly there'll be no music, it's a dramatic comedy and the boys will just be acting.
Wonder when we'll be seeing the Osmonds film we have all heard so much about??? (70s Ed Osmonds film? What Osmond film? What have I missed? )

I have never been a great Rod fan (I have dipped in and liked a few of his tracks, First Cut, All for Love and his American Song Book trio had some great duets) but you can not argue that he certainly has stood the test of time.. I can't believe the guy is 63 years old now.

Yes I kept the ticket. I found it stuck in an old scrapbook

I had been to many concerts as a teen (Blood Sweat & Tears, Mud, Bay City Rollers, Cozy Powell, Sweet, Wizard, Electric Light Orchestra, Roxy Music, Gary Glitter) but this was the first one out side of The Floral Hall, Southport. It was at Bingley Hall and a massive gig. So many people. The stage show was spectacular. The You Tube clip below is of their concert in Japan in 1979 so it would have been what I saw in 1979 too.
Leap Year Interlude ..... Fanzine Frenzy II
Since I last posted the mail has gone mad both snail and eeeeee mail wise I can tell you. My postman has developed a hernia in his sack and my admin 'full mailbox' has flashed at me more times than a flasher in a raincoat.
The phenomenon that has become the DP Fanclub has taken over the world.
70s has managed to scoop a world exclusive in all of this!! And remember you heard it here first!
Yes he is now in the running for the US Presidency.
I know who would have ever thought it but today 70s was in the right place at the right time for a change.... photo of him addressing the US nation
(I am told that he is working on his teeth 'problem' and Kevin D of FMB is to blame for his current difficulties!!)
To back up this exclusive I found some quotes from another runner in the Presidential quest:-
Quote.
The challenges of change are always hard, particularly when you are Daddy Papersurfer's age . It is important that we begin to unpack those challenges that confront this nation and realize that Daddy Papersurfer requires us to change and become more responsible for shaping our own future. And that future is a pair of comfy charantaise, malt & cocoa.
I have gone from a Barry Goldwater Republican to a New Daddy Papersurfer fan, but I think my underlying values have remained pretty constant; individual responsibility and care in the gated community. I do not see those as being mutually inconsistent as Daddy Papersurfer told me it wasn't .
Great words, I think you will agree, from a fellow candidate.
The U.S. has certainly taken DP to their hearts. This is evident with the photo I was sent earlier today. Incredible don't you think?
This is a really Top Secret scoop .....even the currency is under review. I managed sneak a glimpse at the work that has been going on to capture the moment should he win.
These are the early proto types.... but you can see the progress.. the question remains 'how long will DP remain bogus??'
Stepping aside from his notoriety in the U.S. of A. As I have mentioned his fans span the world. So back to the fan mail ... it is stacking up. I am trying to get on top of it but filing my nails and cleaning the toilet just seem to take priority (note to self.... time management to be considered)

However, this one struck a cord with me and I just had to publish from a dear fan club member just across the water from me. Beautifully written, chic with a certain je ne sais quoi......
Dear Daddy Papersurfer, I realise you can't respond to each individual fans but I just wanted you to know that I am most excited about your club!!! I always wanted to feel like I belonged somewhere and now I think I have FINALLY achieved that with your club. Thank you thank thank you! P.S: I would appreciate your discretion as always :-) ( name removed to protect her identity!) x Always!
Please continue to write to DP and those who have not joined yet ... I know you want to !
